Apply for social assistance (first application)
People who cannot cover their living costs from their own means can apply for social assistance at the City of Zurich's Social Services. The social centre of one's residential district is responsible. Amount and entitlement follow the SKOS guidelines and the cantonal social assistance act.
Common concerns that lead here
Digital maturity & simplification
Online maturity:OfflineStatus: ObservedMedia breaks
- In-person visit
- Printing
- Re-entering data
Data already on file (once-only)
Income, asset and rent data are partly held by other bodies (tax office, compensation fund). Automation is sensitive here for data-protection reasons, but could reduce repeated evidence gathering.
Pain points
- Registration and interviews require appearing in person; no end-to-end online path.
- Very extensive documentation duties, often on paper.
- Barriers and stigma sometimes deter eligible people from applying.
Improvement ideas
- Digital initial registration and secure document upload to complement the in-person interview.
- Clear multilingual overview of required documents in advance.
Impact & metrics
- Time to first payment: wenige Wochen (situationsabhängig)
